What is an Affirmation and how do I write one?

It is a positive statement made in the present about your future. When you state an affirmation it is best to be done as if that event has already occurred.

e.g. 'I love my new job, it is everything I had hoped for, the salary is good, my colleagues are very nice, the work is interesting and I am so grateful to have found it.'

Now in actual fact, you may be in a job that you hate and want to leave so this currently does not apply to you; but affirmations are about manifesting what we want into our lives so we focus on what we want as if we have it now and we do so not just with our mind but our heart and soul. That is why I added the 'I am so grateful' to the affirmation.

Examples of Affirmations

You may be looking for a relationship and finding it a bit hard going. So you can use something like this:

'I am so blessed to have found my perfect romantic partner and that he/she is free to be with me. We have a wonderful relationship and so much in common'.

When you say this use your imagination to feel what that relationship is like, feel it with your heart and your soul. Feel the joy you get out of each day of being with this perfect partner and feel the love surrounding it.

I would hesitate to give him/her too much detail as you may have a physical image of someone who is not perfect for you on a soul level.

Give the relationship the detail instead and allow the relationship to come to you.

Don't use words like 'I'm lonely, please help me find someone to share my life with'.

Firstly, if you affirm you are lonely and keep repeating it then that is how you will remain. Secondly you are just asking to share your life with someone instead of asking for your perfect romantic partner.

If you are looking for a new place to live you can write something like this:

'I am so happy in this lovely sunny home, I have good neighbors who are friendly yet unobtrusive, I have a great garden which is easy to maintain and a joy to be in. I have everything in the house that I asked for and all for an affordable price. I am so fortunate to be here.'

See yourself in your new home, walking around the garden and the house; see your furniture in there and any pictures on the walls. See yourself living there. Feel the joy you have in this house - your new home!

Now if you want a 5 bedroom house with a pool and a bbq area add this to your affirmation:

'I love all the 5 bedrooms and the pool is so inviting especially with the entertainment area outside nearby'.

Don't go into the colour you want the walls to be or what tiles you want in the bathroom or plants in the garden. Be a bit realistic while keeping a visual focus of your new dream home. You can paint the walls later!

For financial security, you can write something like

'It is so nice to have a healthy bank balance and the freedom to purchase anything I desire or need. I am receiving great interest from the bank on all my savings. I thank the Universe for helping me achieve it.'

Don't mention the words debt, bills or any other similar negative words. You must always keep affirmation in the positive.

Oh an interesting tip is when you do receive a bill, instead of groaning about it, spend a minute thanking it; for by paying this bill your family has had the use of a phone and communication with family and friends, or you have had the use of electricity to cook your meals and lighting for your home. Thank your credit card for the purchases you are enjoying now instead of later etc. I'm not crazy; this really helps to change the attitude toward bills and money in general.

More Affirmation Examples

I am so grateful I have a healthy and fit body and I choose to care for it by eating only nourishing foods and exercising regularly.

I am honoured to be part of such a wonderful loving family that supports each other so well and unconditionally.

I embrace the psychic abilities that I am discovering within myself and know that I will continue to grow and blossom.

I am at peace in my relationship with my ________ and feel the gentleness of forgiveness each time I think of _____________.

I abound with energy and embrace each new day that enters my life. I release the past to conquer the future.

I am having a wonderful time on my European holiday, so much to see and do and so many wonderful people to meet.

Tips on Writing Affirmations

Writing your own affirmations is easy once you have a picture in your head of what you desire. Keep it simple and say it with your heart and soul.

To accompany your affirmation you can then make a board of pictures supporting your affirmation.

For a relationship board you can add pictures of happy couples, pictures of couples on holiday or on honeymoon (you'll find lots in magazines), you can add hearts and roses or whatever you feel your relationship will be about. If you love camping then add pictures of couples camping or on a boat if that is your passion. You could put pictures of fireworks above a couple to symbolise the union and the joy. Use your imagination!

For a new job, put a picture of yourself on the board, dressed in the attire you would wear to this new job. You could be holding a plaque saying I GOT IT! Or be toasting yourself. Whatever you choose, make it happy and bright. See yourself smiling back at yourself every morning before you leave for work!

For a new home again get the magazines out and the realtor magazines. Write what you desire in your new home - 5 bedrooms with a downstairs study area, 2 bathrooms with a sep WC, large kitchen with plenty of pantry space, a manageable backyard with room for a flower bed and a vegetable garden, within walking distance of the local school etc.

Now you have written your list cut out pictures of back gardens you like, pools you like, living rooms you like, kitchens you like and see the house come together. You don't have to have a picture of every room and again don't be too specific- it would be a shame to miss out on a house just because you wanted a pebbled driveway and the perfect house had a concrete one. Write 'OUR NEW HOME!' on it also and don't forget to add the suburb or area you want to be in.

As you make these 'boards' write your affirmation on the top of them and feel it all coming together. Sit with these boards each day and feel them coming alive.

For each person affirmations are different and it is always best to write your own as you know what feels right to you. I use words like blessed, honoured, embrace but you may shirk from these and need to find words that feel right for you.

It may take you a few tries before its right but keep going as 'I know it is within each one of us to manifest through affirmations everything we desire in this life.'

Don't forget to 'feel' it as you write it.

Oh, one last point. When I say an affirmation - I say it over 7 times, as each time I say it there is a different depth to it. Then I repeat this process several times a day using my visualization at the same time.

I'd love to hear feedback from you.

Happy Writing.
